A True Textbook for Advanced Organic Chemistry

Often the most difficult part of a course of study is to find a structure in which to pursue it. Most books entitled “Advanced Organic Chemistry” are encyclopedic volumes which tend to emphasize certain aspects of the subject, such as physical organic chemistry or organic synthesis. These books can also be very intimidating to the student, especially one who is doing a self-study.
This new book is perfect for overcoming these obstacles. While it is over 1100 pages in length, it is so well organized that the totality of organic chemistry can be approached at an advanced level. There is a good balance between physical organic and synthetic aspects of the subject. The chapters build in an orderly fashion, with plenty of problems to test the student’s competence. The writing style is very smooth, and it is a joy to read.
The only area for improvement that I can see for future editions is the judicious use of color in some of the drawings. Currently the book is in black and white. A little color would be helpful in places.
Overall, this is a superb book, well suited for both classroom use and self-study. Anyone entering graduate school, as well as those already in a degree program, would be wise to acquire a copy. It should also be on the bookshelf of every practicing organic chemist.

This book is EXTREMELY well-organized (and well-written). There are tons of descriptive diagrams and pictures included for important review topics as well as new material. I particularly appreciate that the answers for practice problems are worked out and included right in the chapter for easy reference. This is a wonderful reference guide for advanced chemistry students or light reading for nerds like me.
