About the Author
Stephanie Storey is a writer and art fanatic. She has a degree in Fine Arts from Vanderbilt University and an MFA from Emerson College. She studied art in Italy and went on a pilgrimage to see every Michelangelo on display in Europe. When not writing fiction and screenplays, she works as a television producer. Oil and Marble is her debut novel. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, an actor and Emmy-winning comedy writer.

"Oil and Marble" brings art alive.

“Oil and Marble” delivers what I like best about good historical fiction. By breathing life into iconic historical figures, Ms. Storey reminds us that history didn’t just happen, but is the product of very human preferences, choices, and actions. The story itself was gracefully written, but also thoroughly entertaining. As a bonus, I also learned about Italian politics and Renaissance art. I especially appreciated the author’s knowledge of the “mechanics” of art, which gave this casual art observer better insight into the artistic process and what makes art great. I highly recommend this book.

Oil and Marble - A novel of Leonardo and Michaelangelo.

I am not an art expert but I do have basic knowledge. When I started to read this book I was afraid that Ms. Storey would not be able to bring these artists to life for me. I was afraid it would be solely a history story with rather wooden characters. How wrong I was, I now have new insights into these two great artists, they are no longer just names but living breathing men. This is a great read and I thoroughly recommend it.

Reading this was like returning to Florence without the crowds.

Having very recently returned from a trip to Florence I dipped into this book, hoping it would teach me more about the city and the artists of the Renaissance. I am so glad I did. I kept returning to the twenty pictures I had taken of David and experiencing with anticipation and frustration the setbacks, the insecurity, the disrespect suffered by Michelangelo. We know he was a genius, but in this book he is shown as a young man inflamed by his passion for sculpture who is almost consumed by his desperate need to create, to be acknowledged by his family and his city, with little else in his world except the need to turn marble into immortal art. Leonardo da Vinci is shown as older, more vain, more sophisticated, more complicated and complex and finally more interesting. Also a genius, his adversary is primarily internal. He never completes any project. He is already famous and recognized as a genius and in art mad Italy, he is constantly being saved from his own follies. His greatest adversary is his own mind. He has so many ideas,he is on the one hand remote from the normal pressures of life, and, on the other, intensely lonely, competitive, and obsessed with his questions, his engineering designs, his need to conquer flight, and his own alienation from his father. The rivalry between possibly the two greatest artists of the millenium and the coincidence that their greatest masterpieces, the Mona Lisa and David, were both created at virtually the same time in the city of Florence, is the tension within this book. As well some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance are supplementary characters. Some of the story is fiction, but the two men and their art are real and the writer has brought them both to life on the page.

This was an unusual book. It reads mostly as an autobiography of a most unusual woman. She was employed part time as a submissive. I found her descriptions of her world as a spankee quite interesting.

I especially related to her stories of trying to conceive. It was heartbreaking for her to lose her ability to have children far too young.

It was also sad about her being widowed. Unfortunately her husband did not hold up his end of their marriage financially. This left her with some very large debts. Eventually this led to her second very irregular job.

Overall the book held my interest. If she herself wasnt involved in the spanking world, it certainly came across realistically portrayed.

Strange book but overall I thought it was very interesting

To get the disclaimers out of the way, this is obviously not a book for minors. If you looked at the title and cover and thought "Little Timmy would love this," shame on you.

It recounts the life of Anna Skye, an average woman as she gets into being spanked as a second career. After a fairly peaceful life, her world is spun about by several events. Among those events, she loses the ability to have children too early in life, and her husband dies, leaving her sunk into debt.
Luckily there are people who would pay for the pleasure of spanking a nicely-shaped bum. Looking for a way to stay afloat and give her life a spark that it had been missing, she soon dips her toes into getting spanked for cash.

The writing is conversational and friendly in tone. For those expected an especially sordid novel, the author approaches it in a very light way that is a nice juxtaposition with the BDSM contents. I found it very easy to glide through the pages. For people seeking the crazy whirlwind romance of 50 Shades, this is a surprisingly "normal" book. I found it interesting, if for nothing else than I enjoy reading about others lives. Its probably not the most exciting thing to read, and it takes a while to get to the juicy tidbits. I came to feel sympathetic when bad things happened to her, but her outlook on life is admirable and she tends not to dwell on things, instead choosing to look forward.

The very personal retelling of life events by the author. Anna has 2 dreams to get married and to have children. She is very particular in choosing her spouse. 2 abortions and several relationships later she finds what she is looking for. They together make several attempts into have children at a very large expense. Her husband, however, who hasn't worked in turn brings a financial debt to her upon his death as well as the ability to use a surrogate. At her age adoption can be a risk.

Anna through a previous relationship discovers that she likes to be spanked. Now alone, desperate for a companion, in need of �20,000 she decides to try it for money. The adventures of Annas spanking life have begun as does the offer to be a "sub". All the while giving her hand to several failed attempts of online dating.

Review:
Ann has written this book as if it is her diary. This allows you to connect with her personally and feel what she feels as you relate. The book is not what is expected in the beginning. As you read you find it easy to go through and want to see what the outcome will be. The characters in the book are well written and I feel as I could meet these people and know them. In the end Anna learns acceptance for her life. You know she is a strong person. A good read, for mature readers only.

About the Author
Jean-Paul Sartre was a prolific philosopher, novelist, public intellectual, biographer, playwright and founder of the journal Les Temps Modernes. Born in Paris in 1905 and died in 1980, Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1964—and turned it down. His books include Nausea, Intimacy, The Flies, No Exit, Sartre’s War Diaries, Critique of Dialectical Reason, and the monumental treatise Being and Nothingness.

Quintin Hoare is the director of the Bosnian Institute and has translated numerous works by Sartre, Antonio Gramsci, and other French authors. He lives in the United Kingdom.

Poor Print Quality

Although I'm very happy to see Verso reissuing The Freud Scenario, those who prefer hardcovers should be advised of the particularly poor print quality of this item. Even though this is a thick text, the hardcover does not have sewn signatures but a single sheet glued spine. If you've purchased a hardcover from Continuum, like Badiou's Logics of Worlds, you'll know the type of binding I'm referring to. Additionally, the quality of the cover itself is not cloth, but more of a fiber infused blue masking tape. The blue dye used in the cover frequently smears on the ends of the book, turns white at creases, and the print quality of the pages is itself rather poor, resembling xerox copies in which the letter forms of the font used are frequently incomplete. About the Author

Dr. Ashley Godbold is a programmer, game designer, artist, mathematician, and teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, a Master of Science in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science in Game Art and Design, and a Doctor of Computer Science in Emerging Media, where her dissertation research focused on educational video game design. She works full-time as a game developer and also runs a small indie/passion studio. She teaches college courses in Unity, 3ds Max, Adobe Flash, game design, and mathematics.

Simon Jackson has been a tinkerer, engineer, problem solver, and solution gatherer ever since his early years. In short, he loves to break things apart, figure out how they work, and then put them back together; usually better than before. He started way back when with his first computer, the Commodore Vic20. It was simple, used a tape deck, and forced you to write programs in Basic or assembly language; those were fun times. From there, he progressed through the ZX Spectrum +2 and the joyous days of modern graphics, but still with the 30-minute load times from a trusty tape deck. Games were his passion even then, which led to many requests for another gaming machine, but Santa brought him an Amstrad 1640, his first PC. From there, his tinkering and building exploded, and that machine ended up being a huge monstrosity with so many add-ons and tweaked fixes. He was Frankenstein, and this PC became his own personal monster crafted from so many parts. Good times. This passion led him down many paths, and he learned to help educate others on the tips and tricks he learned along the way; these skills have equipped him well for the future. Today, he would class himself as a game development generalist. He works with many different frameworks, each time digging down and ripping them apart, and then showing whoever would listen through his blog, videos, and speaking events how to build awesome frameworks and titles. This has been throughout many generations of C++, MDX, XNA (what a breath of fresh air that was), MonoGame, Unity3D, The Sunburn Gaming Engine, HTML, and a bunch of other proprietary frameworks - he did them all. This gives him a very balanced view of how to build and manage many different types of multiplatform titles. He didn't stop there as he regularly contributed to the MonoGame project, adding new features and samples, and publishing on NuGet. He also has several of his own open source.

This book by Ashley Godbold is a very detailed guide for the game developer desiring to get the most out of Unity.
Don't be fooled by the title referring to 2D games! Though the book actually contains a step by step guide for creating a full featured, RPG styled 2D game with Unity, it also provides useful resources and excellent programming techniques that put this manual a step beyond its competitors!
An absolute "must have" for anyone willing to improve his skills with Unity and make better games.

The Night That Panicked America; Or Not

The radio broadcast on Halloween Eve 1938 of _War of the Worlds_ is the stuff of legend; it was, according to the title of one of several dramatizations of the event, _The Night That Panicked America_. The fake newscast about invading Martians, the stories go, led thousands of Americans to flee their homes, some heading to safer territory, some grabbing their guns to do battle. These are good stories, and in some cases they are close to truth, but they do not at all represent what actually happened. A. Brad Schwartz has studied the broadcast and its aftermath for years, doing his senior honors thesis on it and writing about it for PBS. Now his entertaining _Broadcast Hysteria: Orson Welles’s War of the Worlds and the Art of Fake News_ (Hill and Wang) gives fresh documentation of what really happened. The story isn’t as dramatic as the “panic” versions, but it is more interesting with its new details, and with some lessons for us residents of the twentieth century who get our fake news from sources more modern than radio plays.

The Mercury Theater radio shows were serious dramas broadcast by CBS, and serious listeners enjoyed them. Schwartz has drawn on letters listeners wrote to the FCC, CBS, and to Welles himself (some of these letters only recently resurfaced) to analyze what really happened as the broadcast progressed. There were people who panicked, but Schwartz explains, “These panicked scenes of flight and near flight, which turned _War of the Worlds_ into the stuff of American legend, did happen, but they were very, very rare.” There was no mass hysteria, no suicides, no potshots at a water tower that was mistaken for a towering Martian machine, and no highways clogged with cars. What did happen? Well, people listened to their radios - they either enjoyed the drama as good radio theater and a thrilling scary story, or they were scared out of their minds and wanted all the news immediately. There were about six million listeners to the show, and about a million thought there was a real emergency, but the sort of emergency was not clear. Some did think that Martians were coming, and others thought a comet had made a disastrous impact. Some tuning in the middle of the program could have gotten the impression that there was a natural disaster on the east coast, or some sort of invasion by human armies. They called each other to spread the stories, and they called the police, and they called the newspapers, but in almost every case, they did not panic. The general lack of panic wasn’t a good enough story for the press at the time. It was far more fun to spread the stories of people who hit the road to flee the Martians, and those are the stories that stuck.

That millions of Americans panicked on hearing the broadcast turned out to be fake news, thought of as real even by those who had skepticism enough about the broadcast itself. Schwartz shows that this made people fret about government involvement in broadcasting, weakening the FCC. The panic is still invoked by people worried about how manipulative broadcasters might be. There have been fake news TV shows, like _Special Bulletin_ (1983), which was about a terrorist attack on Charleston, South Carolina. These shows didn’t produce the scares that the Mercury Theater did; Schwartz rightly points out that one of the reasons is that the visual effects on television might be iffy, but the visual effects of radio are always convincing, because people imagine them for themselves. And we have had Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and _The Onion_ to give us news that isn’t. Keep the airwaves open, is the lesson, and also: whether it be invading Martians, or Americans panicking in the streets: don’t believe everything you hear.

Excellent Book

Excellent book for anyone interested in this broadcast, broadcasting history or 1930's radio. The book gives excellent, in depth coverage of the subject. Some of the issues involved in the War of the Worlds broadcast are with us today, such as the power of the media, what should be the role of government with regards to the media and efforts of the media to police itself which can be worse than government regulation. A good point the book makes is that the hysteria was blown way out of proportion by the news media and much of the hysteria can be blamed on an ignorant, poorly informed public who ignored reports of a Martian invasion and thought the Germans had invaded or a natural disaster had occurred. Public ignorance is a problem today.

Fascinating analysis of probably the most famous radio broadcast, exploring both the actual story behind the perceived mass hysteria in the US (a misinterpretation sadly still widely taught) and the importance of fake news for modern media consumption. Also simply a well-written book that's enjoyable to read.
