Outdated and Lacking Information
By AM
I usually like lonely planet but I can't recommend it for China. It has some fair information but most of the prices are very outdated (after only a few months) along with a host of other problems. I have been traveling in China for 1 month and have found that the book doesn't give information about some very touristed areas and spends far too much time on cities that should be skipped altogether. The book also downplays the hordes of Chinese tourists everywhere and paints every sight as a peaceful, picturesque experience. This hasn't been the case at all. The writers need to be more honest about sights and give more information about even the biggest tourist attractions, namely Yangshuo. Buy someone else's guide or contact me and I will send you mine for free. Please take it off my hands as it is heavy and not worth anything.

Good information, but no tone marks on the pinyin in the Kindle edition, which makes it a pain to use!
By Amazon Customer
This is specific to the Kindle edition: no tone marks on the pinyin in the text, which makes it a pain to use! (The printed version of the book DOES have toned marks on the pinyin, so my complaint doesn't apply to the print edition).

Okay, so this may not be a big deal to many people, but I speak enough Chinese to ask for directions, but don't read (very many) Chinese characters. So having tone marks on the pinyin for names of restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc. makes it a lot easier to ask someone for directions, and it seems like I have to ask for directions more in China than other places I've travelled. Sure, many times Chinese people can figure out what you are trying to say if you say a name in all neutral tones, but being able to pronounce names properly definitely makes things easier and less confusing for everyone. And yes, I could show the characters to people (assuming they read, not always the case!), but it is easier if I can just read the name once to myself before setting off and remember how to say it accurately instead of having to dig out my phone to show someone each time I ask directions.

The work-around I used with the previous edition of this guide (which suffered the same problem) while traveling in China was to copy and paste the characters into the electronic dictionary on my phone to figure out the correct tones. That works, but is irritating since the information could easily just be presented in the text!

BTW, the Kindle edition of Lonely Planet's Discover China 2013 DOES contain pinyin with tone marks, so I'm not sure why this Kindle edition doesn't. However, this edition covers a lot more of the country (and generally covers the locations that also appear in Discover China in more detail) so would be a better choice if you are traveling beyond the major highlights (and will be using the print edition or are not as irritated by the lack of tone marks as I am).

I was hoping this edition would fix the tone mark problem, but it apparently has not, so I'll be avoiding purchasing this and looking for another electronic guide book option, since I travel light and don't want to lug around the print edition.

Lonely Planet: please fix this problem with the Kindle edition of the book!

This is a good book covering the whole country
By Victor B
This is a good book covering the whole country, but since China is so vast it's impossible to provide much detail on particular locations in China. If you will be visiting any regions for which more detailed guidebooks are available, I strongly suggest you to buy the regional or city guidebooks as well. Infrastructure improvements are so rapid in China, even a newly published guidebook like this one will be out of date in some respects especially on transportation--there are new highways and high speed trains between cities, and new metro lines in cities, not shown in the book. So you need to check online or locally for the latest information. I used the internet to choose hotels as this book can have only a small sampling of available hotels. But this book was very useful for finding points of interest to visit.
