Enlightening, Accessible, and Enjoyable.

My Name is Tyler. I'm an actor, and a musician. At fist glance, a title like "Fake Work", immediately brings to mind the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."
As you delve into the book (further than 10 pages, Mr. Karten), you are immediately cast into a world of corporate nonsense, and Tom-Sawyer-foolery; where the things that seem so critical to being or SEEMING successful are placed under a microscope, and revealed to be a hindrance to oneself, or to whom one works for.
This book forces everyone to ask a Hamlet-esque question: Am I Doing Fake Work, or Real Work? As an Actor, I read this book without the focus of a corporate lens, and yet it still spoke to my profession as well. How many films have gone over-budget due to poor planning, or misguided alignment - the cogs in the proverbial machine not all turning at once? How many millions of dollars end up on the cutting room floor? How many of us - not just in our work, but in our lives - do things that don't serve our ultimate goals?
While reading this book, I conjured the metaphor of a beehive. In a beehive none of the worker bees are micro-managed. None of them spend time - or rather waste time - doing things that don't serve the hive. Every member on every level of the hive understands its strategic relevance to the success of the hive, and they all just do their job. (and they don't even get paid.)
I know full-well that a metaphor like this is missing the complex intricacies of any corporation or business, but the key message to me is: Understand your job, and how it helps your company thrive. From an extra to the producer of a film - everyone plays a critical role in telling a story successfully.
I don't know about anyone else out there, but the story of a long, hard day of bailing hay, and plowing the fields; and coming inside to a warm home-cooked meal and a smiling wife, is a Romance to me. The story of the person sitting in front of a computer, of staying up all night or weekend, of pots upon pots of coffee to get that one document done for your company, and have it ignored - is a Tragedy.
We could all use a little more family time, a little less stress, and a better economy, but this book won't solve that problem on its own - It needs the help of dedicated workers. Read this book. Follow the Paths and just do real work.

Making A Difference

I was glad to come into a copy of this book "Fake Work". I am a supervisor at a computer support desk with student employees. Because of the stories and examples in this book, I have been able to teach better ways of thinking to my students. As they graduate and go on to jobs in all fields of work, I hope they take something with them to do real work and have time for family and to live life!

I love the examples throughout the book. The examples help me to find comparable situations in my work life as well as my home and family. I appreciate the time and experiences Mr. Nielson and Mr. Peterson have had and now share in this book.

Additionally, I love that each chapter has the "Road Map For Action" to summarize the learnings and give me a place to start asking questions.

I have told and retold the story about 'The Road To Nowhere' so many times. It has almost become a theme in my life.

I highly recommend this book not just for a manager to read, but for an entire organization to adopt the teachings of this book. Every member of the team can be a part of making a difference in their own way and collectively.

Honest Examination of "Fake" Work

What a great book! A kind of anonymous whistle blow; yet another inconvenient truth about work-life. As a psychologist in solo private practice with zero necessity for "fake work," having read this book, I find myself feeling overwhelmingly fortunate with the opportunity to earn a living with minimum of pretense. "Fake work" - the phenomenon, not the book - is an existential calamity. Building roads into nowhere is what rotted Soviet style socialism from inside out (as they used to say in my country of origin, "they pretend to pay us, and we pretend to work"). Sure, work that is not aligned with company's strategic goals is a tactical productivity loss. But, most importantly, "fake work" is a loss of morale and authenticity of the work life - and as such a productivity loss of strategic (long-term) significance. On a personal level, given that the lion share of our adult time (and progressively more so) is spent at work, "fake work" (work without meaning) is an existential suicide. Peterson and Nielson are calling on us to step away from the ledge of work-life meaninglessness.

As a book, "Fake Work" is the kind of book that could have sent the authors to Gulag if it had been written in the Soviet Union. Peterson and Nielson, with a mixture of compassion and straight-shooting mercilessness, strip away the layers of corporate pretense, delving deep into the administrative and psychological motivations behind "fake work." The authors go well beyond the statement of the problem: they offer both individual-level (bottom-up) and managerial-level (top-down) solutions for preventing and/or controlling the morale- and bottom-line-rusting effects of "fake work."

As such, the book is a must read for anyone who works for anyone (I am allowing myself an assumption that self-employed individuals are less susceptible to the "fake work" phenomenon although, as the authors imply, this might not be necessarily so in the cases of where "billing for time" can create Potemkin-village illusions of productivity).

In short, "Fake Work" compels the employees and the employers to shift away from the paradigm of pro forma processes towards essence- and meaning-focused work. Why? Because it pays!

Plagued by Math Errors and Incomplete Formulas

This book has numerous issues with incomplete formulas, math errors, and poor editing. Many of the questions at the end of the chapters are incomplete and the solutions in the manual often add in information that was not in the question. The solutions manual has lots of numbers transposed and on multipart questions these errors cause all of the answers to be incorrect. In addition, many of the solutions will change par value in the middle of the answer making it very confusing.

The editor of this book should be fired immediately.

A lot of hand waving, but does help

A little too wordy, but as a management text, I guess its a prerequisite. It covers the gamut of fixed income securities, but only approaches the problems deterministically. The first thirteen chapters are "text" chapters, with the real math starting in chapter 14. However, the math used is elementary, and will not be of much help in the real world. For the fixed income math portion look into "Bond Pricing and Portfolio Analysis" by Olivier de La Grandville.
For a first course in bonds, and if the student has no prior background, this book will indeed be useful. But, for advanced students the book mentioned above should be more insightful.

Excellent introduction to Bond Markets - VERY well written

If you think of this as an introductory book to the world of Bonds rather than a field manual for professionals you will find this to be a wonderful book. I find it to be engagingly written (yes, engaging!) with well-chosen examples. It is very nice to be able to read a book about Bonds and find it stimulating. It would have been easy to write a book that could act as a sleep-aid. Instead, this book provides learning objectives for each chapter and the prose is so inviting that I felt the book to be a page-turner.
The math used is not complicated and is chosen to help understanding rather than demonstrate the sophisticated math used in the actual world of bond trading. If you want that kind of material this isn't the book for you.
I don't know if there is a solutions manual available, but I couldn't find it. If there isn't, there should be. I have never had a college course that used the problems in the book for actual coursework and yet, no matter how simple the problems seem, it is nice for the student to be able to confirm that he or she has indeed found the right answer.
There are also many helpful footnotes that point to materials for further and deeper reading on the subjects introduced in this fine book.

Excellent book from the most experiences expert in Beyond Budgeting

I'm really happy to see that Bjarte Bogsnes has found the time to share his experiences with all of us interesting in innovative uses of management control systems. Bjarte has been in charge of implementing Beyond Budgeting (BB) in both Borealis and Statoilhydro - and he is probably the one with the most comprehesive experiences of bringing the Beyond Budgeting pricinples to work.

Actually the book is about totally abandoning budgets. That's the key principle in BB. But it's mandatory reading for anyone working with improving or reforming budgeting models. It may sounds like an impossible mission to give up budgeting. But it all depends on what you put instead. So, if you don't think you can live without a budget you need to realise how a combinaton of balanced scorecard, activity based costing, forecasting, benchmarking etc. can be designed to be an alternative to budgeting.

Even though you don't give up budgeting, it can still be improved. And "Implementing Beyond Budgeting" has lots of ideas here.

It is an interesting book that describes the different experiencies, challenges, recommendations, success and failures through this new approach.

I strongly recommend this book for the managers and organizations who wants to improve the efficiency in their organizations and take advantage of the potential of their staff by empowering them even more.

This document should be accompanied with the reading of other books such as KPIs and forecasting to better understand how to apply some recommendations given through the book.Implementing Beyond Budgeting: Unlocking the Performance Potential

Boring and not that useful

I have been interest in the Beyond Budgeting Concept since I read Winning, from Jack Welch, where the former GE's CEO criticized budgets and all of their negative consequences. After reading Beyond Budgeting, from Jeremy Hope and Robin Fraser, I felt I still needed to know more about the concept, before being able to implement it in my company. That's how I bought Implementing Beyond Budgeting. The good praise it had from Hope himself, and the introduction by Robert S. Kaplan were enough to convince me.

Unfortunately, the book is far from what I expected, Bjarte Bogsnes alternates between giving some useful advice on implementation and sharing his personal feelings about the wonderful enterprises he has worked in, which gets really annoying. The book doesn't have a structure to help you to really implement Beyond Budgeting, instead, it goes from one enterprise to another, leaving some piece of advice on the way. The final chapter, Making the Change, seems to be a (bad) paraphrase of John Kotter's excellent book, Leading Change. Worse, despite Bogsnes introduction where he says his intention is to make this book "not a brick", his book is, actually, a brick. Maybe is because I am not a finance guy, but this book is really boring to read.

Maybe the most interesting part of the book is where Bogsnes gives some advice about how to unify the Beyond Budgeting Theory with the Balanced Scorecard model, which he insists in calling "Ambition to Action" which is the name his company uses.

In summary, if you are really interested in the Beyond Budgeting Concept, I would recommend you to read the Hope and Fraser's book first. Then maybe you should (if you haven't yet) take a look to Kaplan and Norton excellent books on The Balanced Scorecard. Only then, if you are really motivated about the concept and want to get some additional piece of advice and are ready to face the pain, consider this book.

Makes a Good Primer for Those New to Lead Generation

When the founder of the one of the most well-known business-to-business
(B2B) telemarketing firms in the country writes a book about lead
generation, you have to wonder if he is really going to share secrets or
use the book as a plug for his company. "The Truth About Leads" by new
author Dan McDade does a bit of both.

"The Truth About Leads" explains to its readers why marketing teams'
efforts usually fail when it comes to providing so-called leads to their
sales teams. (They don't qualify the leads, and they focus on keeping
costs down.) The book also reveals the gap between marketing and sales
and suggests ways on how to better align the two departments.

McDade is at his best when he gives readers lots of food for thought on
topics such as why long-term leads are actually better than short-term
leads, why prospects stick with the status quo instead of buying, and why
sales people only follow up on less than 30% of the leads provided to
them. He even goes beyond lead generation and shares ideas for how
outside sales teams and managers can improve their efforts in deploying
sales people, monitoring their efforts, and coaching them.

Does the book share little-known secrets? It does if you're new to lead
generation. You will absolutely learn the truth about topics such as the
problem with brokered marketing lists, why a multi-marketing approach to
lead generation works well, and even how specifically to organize a
nurturing campaign by time frame and touches. All good stuff.

While the book has its merits, there are a few issues. Since lead
generation and B2B telemarketing have been around for years now, this book
feels like it's about 10 years late. The author tells readers that
outsourcing lead generation to a firm like his is the most logical choice
for fixing the problem but he neglects to mention training a company's
current staff as an option as well. Also, there simply isn't enough
tactical information to share with readers like in books by leaders in the
industry such as Anthony Parinello or Jill Konrath. It would have
worthwhile to read sample value propositions, sample e-mails, and sample
direct mail pieces for example. And finally, at just over 100 pages, the
author should have expanded on his thoughts on many of the topics
addressed in this book. Perhaps he could have shared more ideas regarding
why companies have such overdependence on marketing automation and why
that differs from what companies like his does. Or maybe he could have
shared his theories on using social media for lead generation and why that
does or doesn't work.

All in all, "The Truth About Leads" is a pretty good book that will make a
good introduction to lead generation and how to fill the gap between sales
and marketing. Those who already understand the business may crave for a
bit more.

The Truth About Leads

A wealth of information in a small package. Reading this book is like talking with Dan; warm, friendly, honest and lot's of common sense. If you are an executive involved with Sales and/or Marketing, you will want to read this book. Why? As businesses become more 'Lean' and rely on 'Best Practices', you know you can't afford to lose opportunities. Deciding if you should DIY, or outsource that function to experts is a decision only you can make. But after reading this book, you will have the knowledge to make an informed decision. The market data that Dan has compiled is contemporary and unique; I have not found it in any other single source.

So I started reading this book thinking, what the heck, I've got nothing to lose. I have run a few companies over the years and this latest company I am at is no different. Bob Dylan fascinates me. The music. The man. The myth. The whole package is so intriguing, and mysterious. I've read many of the books on the walking, talking contradiction but admittedly approached LIFE magazine's Bob Dylan: Forever Young with some skepticism; there were so many books on the man; where would this fit in? You can read my entire review or post your own at allmusicbooks.com. This is far from the definitive word on Dylan, but if you were asked by your parents, your children or someone from another planet, "Why do you think Bob Dylan so important?," this book should be on the short list of where to point them for answers. It's a nice little scrapbook and then some.

Fortunately, for that class, I was lucky enough to have the author of the book as my professor. With that being said, this scenario in no way influenced my 100% honest review. The book not only presented a logical flow of information, but also covered a variety of topics and is paramount to a successful beginning knowledge of Global Studies. The book provided a dearth of information while not making it too bland and wordy. I fully recommend this book to other Global Studies students as well as academics and general readers alike.

Should be required reading, regardless of political persuasion

First comment: the stars summary by Amazon is wrong. As of this review, although it says 32% of the reviews are 1 star, there's actually only a SINGLE 1-star review. That rating was regarding the order process, not the book.

I have never read anything which more clearly describes the immense issues we face currently with government. The book is facts (not alternative) -- not opinion or political slanting or wishful thinking. The subjects and concerns that Ms. Warren raises transcend any political party or ideology. Quite literally, the future of the USA will have dramatically less quality unless courses change.

Almost 1/2 of the book is devoted to voluminous notes backing up the content.

If you care about an America that is still "by the people and for the people", read this book!

Elizabeth Warren is fantastic and she is always right on the mark. I think this is a wonderful tribute to her legacy. America would be in a much better situation if she were listened to more and the American people appreciated all her efforts. A+++++++
