Loved it! Most practical and useful book I've read on PE to date

When I read the title of the first chapter (What is Private Equity?), I thought oh no, this was a mistake. Then I read the second chapter title (Do you have what it takes?), and again, I thought it was another fluffy attempt to put private equity on a pedestal.

But then it got straight into the guts of a 'day in the life' of an investor at a PE firm. From about page 10, I couldn't put it down. I work for a PE firm already, so it's not like I'm new to it, but I loved hearing about how other firms think and it was very interesting to see how they perform valuations and negotiate deals and structure term sheets and all that good stuff. I didn't agree with everything, but I've rethought a few things and learned a lot more. Even though its not short (seems about 300 pages), the points are concise. So in those 300 or so pages, hundreds of concepts are covered. The format was new to me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the fast pace.

I followed the last reviewer's suggestion and went to the author's website for the book. She said you save more money, but it's only a few bucks. The real advantage is getting both the kindle and PDF versions of the book. I'll be able to search the PDF version at work when deals come up.

Refreshing insider info on PE, but cheaper on author's website

I found the format quite unusual, but refreshing. It reads like journal entries, but most contain detailed practical examples. In a way, it's a cross between a technical manual and a diary of 'a day in the life'. Very informative and quite enjoyable.

My only gripe is after buying the book, I visited the author's website looking for more info, but found the book was cheaper.

Good Outlines, Every Third Solution, and Almost All Solutions Are Clear

The guide provides solutions of every other question as well as outlines of each section and some hints (occasional solutions) of the more theoretically involved questions. As long as you have not bought this to cheat by getting all the solutions to your homework, it will give a nice outline and some guidance.

Measuring Landscapes is compact but still comprehensive. Its length makes it very suitable for a single term course in landscape ecology in a planning or natural resource program. Additionally, the book's length makes it very suitable for practitioners. I also recommend this book to all related fields (wildlife management, parks management, geography, geology, and forestry) that have an interest in researching, managing, conserving, and protecting healthy landscapes. Garrett Calcaterra is an author of dark speculative fiction. His books include Dreamwielder, The Roads to Baldairn Motte, and Umbral Visions. In addition, his short work has appeared in dozens of magazines, journals, and anthologies. He is a member of the National Writers Union and teaches writing at various academic institutions. When not writing, he enjoys hiking with his two dogs and quaffing good beer.

Fantastic YA Fantasy

This is a fantastic sequel that has plenty of surprising plot twists. The 14-year-old queen Makarria is back, this time to deal with wicked souldrifters and political conniving from neighboring kingdoms. There are scent-hounds (half-women, half-dogs that are used to communicate over long distances) and also magical speaking stones, as well as some steampunk elements like steam war engines and war blimps.

I like that most of the powerful magicians are women, and each have their own special abilities, and I also particularly enjoyed the careful mix of magic with politics -- it could come off as unbalanced, or one part more boring than the other, but I found it all intriguing and the plot very fast moving.

One of the best quotes that ties this book to the first in the series is this: "Children can win a war, but it takes men to rule a realm." The first book was all about the war, and now this one is all about ruling (which involves some war as well).

Lastly, not to give anything away, but it has a great ending that exceeded all my expectations. Anyone who is a fan of YA fantasy or of Game of Thrones should love this series. If you like powerful women, magic, and trickery, this book is for you.

Great Follow-up to Dreamwielder

In this second installment, Calcaterra manages to take the young Makarria, now a queen with unfathomable magical powers, and confront her with obstacles that immediately humanize her and leave her vulnerable. These challenges, along with a myriad other plot twists, make for an exciting ride as Makarria and her companions struggle to stabilize the realm.

The reading is fast-paced and full of intrigue, with the same harsh world depicted through vivid and fluid prose as Dreamwielder. A great follow-up for this YA fantasy series!

Souldrifter is visceral yet cerebral fantasy at its best. Even more than in the first book of the The Dreamwielder Chronicles, the reader of this second installment can feel the physical and emotional pain the characters pay as the price for using their sorcery. Makarria starts the book as a queen in name only, but to truly earn her title, she must suffer through the obstacles her enemies put in her path. Along the way, she learns how to play the intricate chess game of diplomacy, where an elegantly crafted sequence of moves and countermoves leaves the reader always guessing what will come next and who will come out on top. Recommended for readers who want to use their brains while spilling their enemies' guts.

About the Author
Erika Hoff is professor of psychology at Florida Atlantic University. She has taught language development to undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and, since 1996, at Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Hoff holds an M.S. in psychology from Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey (1976) and a Ph.D. in psychology from University of Michigan (1981). She conducts research on the process of language development in both typically developing children and children with language impairment, and has received funding for this research from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Spencer Foundation. She has published her research in Child Development, Developmental Psychology, First Language, The Journal of Applied Psycholinguistics, The Journal of Child Language, and the Merrill-Palmer Quarterly. Dr. Hoff has contributed chapters to LINGUISTIC DISORDERS AND PATHOLOGIES: AN INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK (1993), THE HANDBOOK OF PARENTING, (2002), THE HANDBOOK OF PSYCHOLOGY, and the MIT ENCYCLOPEDIA OF COMMUNICATION DISORDERS.

Surprisingly interesting and easy to read for a textbook.

First off, let me say, this book is a textbook. If you are looking for a fun book to pick up and lose yourself in, this isn't it. But if you are looking for a book that will really help you understand how a young child, usually with no direct instruction, can go from being non-communicative at birth to being able to communicate in mostly correct and complete sentences by age four, this is for you.

I had to read this entire book, cover to cover, for a college class, and I did enjoy it. Yes, I was reading a textbook, but the material is interesting and the author puts in a LOT of real-life examples which really helped to keep me interested and engaged. I learn well through example, and every topic had one or more stories of experiments done on children or studies done on children to illustrate the concept being discussed. I loved this, as it really made the topics comprehensible and fascinating for me!

I also appreciated that the author presented multiple theories for everything. I'm not sure which theory Hoff subscribes to, because she presented a wide variety in a balanced way. I feel this gave me a fuller understanding of the field.

It did get dry at times. The author did go into detail on EVERYTHING. But that is because this is an introductory book covering a HUGE spectrum of information intended for those who have no background in it. So, for me, I needed that information. There was very little where I wished the author would just get on with it, in general if I got overwhelmed it was at the sheer amount of information contained in the pages.

This was, by far, my best text book this semester. It was accurate, it was interesting (for a textbook), and I feel like I have walked away with a lot of great information from reading it.

ORGANISATION ISSUES

I'M USING THIS BOOK AS A TEXT FOR MY LINGISTICS CLASS, AND I FIND THAT IT'S QUITE DISORGANISED. ASSIGNED READINGS FOR A PARTICULAR TOPIC HAVE TO COME FROM PORTIONS OF DIFFERENT CHAPTERS BECAUSE OF THE WAY HOFF SET UP HER CHAPTERS.
