This book is $170 worth of kindling
By Apple
This book is horribly written and full of grammar curiosities. If you doubt my review, please see the attached image of a corner of page 478 in this wretched book.

Writing aside, the layout of the pages is awful. The columns are interrupted with bright color blocks of examples in an incoherent manner. The equations are strewn about the sections carelessly. The variables are not defined after equations are presented, leaving one to go digging through past chapters and sections to find the meaning of some Greek letter. I have wasted weeks of my life on such endeavors.

The math sections come after the chapter, the questions asked are difficult and don't always get thoroughly discussed in the chapter, the main point of a section is almost always poorly defined. I have written to my professors about how horrid this book is. I feel like it was edited by a team of semi-literate chimpanzees (again, see the attached image if you don't believe me).

Bottom line? This book is a piece of garbage. Buy the book by McQuarrie instead - that is a delight!

Decent book, but takes a while to learn how to navigate
By Raul
So if you're getting this book, here are somethings you will want to know.

1) Before reading the chapter, look at the end of the chapter, before and after the problem section for "Further Information" and the Math lesson supplement. You need not understand it off the bat, but be familiar with what is there so that when you're going through the chapter, you can refer back to further information to make sense of the details.

2) Don't expect a perfect walk-through for the math. You need to sit there with the paper and figure out the skipped steps. There are a lot of skipped steps. Some easy algebra, other harder differentials.

3) When reading the units, you need to beware that you will see things like T/K. This doesn't mean Temperature/Kelvin or anything other that you want to make T to be, but rather saying it is temperature expressed in Kelvin. Seems like a silly way to do it, but once you get that it makes some problems easier.

4) If you get the answer manual, It is only for odds and A parts of problems. Evens and B's are in the Purple version of the answer key and that is pain in the butt to find. So I recommend looking up the previous edition to this one (i.e 8th edition solution manual) and using that one. The problems will be found under different sections/numbering but after a little searching you'll find it. The editions don't change much. No surprise there though.

5) Beware, there are questions awkwardly phrased. There is one in the first chapter regarding a tire. I solved it with my Gen Chem knowledge and it turned out to be wrong. As a class, we discussed it with our professor and found that in order to accurately answer the question, we need to define what is a tire- Meaning is it an isolated system, or not?

6) Make sure to review your basic calculus. In particular partial differentials, cross derivatives, and the terminology. By terminology I mean, something like: You have an equation U. Express U as a function of T. Know what that means.

This is a decent book, but DO NOT make the mistake of thinking it will hold your hand and walk you through a nice path of flowers. Take your time with it and do as much problems as you can as far as you can. If you can get your hand on both versions of the answer keys, I recommend doing all the problems with one, and then returning the next day and doing the B problems without the assistance of the answer key.

GOOD LUCK!

EDIT: I just remembered a quote I thought you all would enjoy, which I found to be true.

Thermodynamics is a funny subject. The first time you go through it, you don't understand it at all. The second time you go through it, you think you understand it, except for one or two small points. The third time you go through it, you know you don't understand it, but by that time you are so used to it, so it doesn't bother you any more. -Arnold Sommerfeld

Unhelpful.
By Kristopher Keyes
I have been taking physical chemistry this semester with this textbook, and it is no help at all. It breezes over the most important concepts and focuses too much time on concepts that aren't as important. By "important", I mean concepts that need to be understood in order to solve the exercises and problems in the book. For example, it only partially explains the different thermodynamic processes, and expects the student to be able to approach the exercises/problems from every possible angle. At the end of each chapter, there are different sections for "exercises" and "problems". This distinction seems a bit misleading, because in general they are equally difficult and tricky, in my experience so far. I don't mind "curveball" questions, as long as you are provided with the general principles with which to come up with a solution, but this book does a poor job of that. It is as if the authors were trying really hard to obscure instead of clarify the main concepts. It is a struggle to actually learn anything from the text. I think one has to already have a good grasp of the material presented to even understand what the book is trying to teach, which makes the text practically worthless to a student taking the course for the first time (like me). I was able to buy this textbook for only $24; I regret wasting even that amount. I am a straight A student in chemistry, so I doubt it has to do with any lack of capability or intelligence on my part.

Commonwealth, by Ann Patchett

#1 New York Times Bestseller

The acclaimed, bestselling author—winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize—tells the enthralling story of how an unexpected romantic encounter irrevocably changes two families’ lives.

One Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins shows up at Franny Keating’s christening party uninvited. Before evening falls, he has kissed Franny’s mother, Beverly—thus setting in motion the dissolution of their marriages and the joining of two families.

Spanning five decades, Commonwealth explores how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children involved. Spending summers together in Virginia, the Keating and Cousins children forge a lasting bond that is based on a shared disillusionment with their parents and the strange and genuine affection that grows up between them.

When, in her twenties, Franny begins an affair with the legendary author Leon Posen and tells him about her family, the story of her siblings is no longer hers to control. Their childhood becomes the basis for his wildly successful book, ultimately forcing them to come to terms with their losses, their guilt, and the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another.

Told with equal measures of humor and heartbreak, Commonwealth is a meditation on inspiration, interpretation, and the ownership of stories. It is a brilliant and tender tale of the far-reaching ties of love and responsibility that bind us together.

Beautifully and observantly told
By Julia Flyte
This is the story of two families: Bert and Teresa who have three children with a fourth on the way, and Fix and Beverly who have two daughters. When Bert and Beverly end up together, the lives of the six children become linked. Despite the fact that for most of the time each set of children will live with their respective mothers, each summer they will all be united and will run wild together. Eventually, a tragedy will occur, which each will be permanently marked by.

This is a character driven book rather than a plot driven one. It unfolds in a non-linear way, sometimes referring to events that we don't know about yet, and then circling back to fill in the gaps. I liked piecing the jigsaw of what happened and what everyone's story was together. I also really liked Ann Patchett's passing asides about things. She has a wonderfully descriptive way of mentioning something you've never given a lot of thought to, but making you think: "yes! that's exactly how it is!".

While I enjoyed this very much, it was ultimately a little too aimless for me: hence the four star rating.

Immediately Engrossing!
By Mary Lins
Ann Patchett's new novel, "Commonwealth", surpassed my expectations and solidly earned a spot on my “Best of 2016” list. This character-driven domestic drama swept me up into the lives of the Cousins and Keating families as Patchett deftly revealed secrets and tragedies over the span of five decades. Be assured that “Commonwealth” is not without Patchett’s wry humor, after all, it IS about family.

"Commonwealth" is a novel about two families whose fates are set into motion one LA afternoon in the 1960s at a Christening party to which a large bottle of gin is brought, and ripe oranges happen to be plentiful on the neighborhood trees. If any one detail of that day had been different, so would be the lives of the two families that were set into motion like a cascade of falling dominoes. "Commonwealth" is immediately engrossing; I can't imagine reading the first chapter and not being compelled to read on. The novel floats back and forth in time and among the members of the Cousins and Keating families, specifically the six children united by their hatred of their parents. Don't let the term "domestic drama" fool you into thinking this is light fare; Patchett can do in 300 pages what Franzen does in 600 - paint a fully realized picture of family life with all its many facets: humor, despair, evil thoughts, sibling rivalry, fraught relationships, tragedies, revenge and betrayal.

Speaking of betrayal, Patchett employs a neat little conceit by having one of the characters reveal family secrets to a famous author who uses these as the basis of a prize-winning bestseller called, "Commonwealth". Several sections of the novel deal with how particular family members react to their lives being re-told and re-shaped for mass consumption. As an avid reader of family-centric novels, I wondered how often this scenario plays out in reality; I’m guessing it is often.

I've read Patchett's entire oeuvre, and no two novels are alike, yet Patchett writes convincingly in each; we don't feel she's merely researched her topics well, we feel she's LIVED them. Has she: lived in a home for unwed mothers? Been a magician's assistant, or an opera singer held captive? Has she been to the Amazon? Is she a child of divorce? Unlikely all are true, but one would be forgiven for wondering.
"Commonwealth", is one of those novels that you race to finish because you want to know what happens to characters you’ve come to care about, while at the same time you want to slow down to make it last.

Good and bad...but format was a hot mess to me
By booklover343
I really struggled to write this review. I'm a big fan of Ann Patchett and have read all of her books. I also admire that she is co-owner of an independent bookstore in Nashville.

But...

Here's what I liked:
1. The writing is excellent and has Patchett's flair
2. Some of the story turns were compelling and could have merited an entire novel on their own.
3. The title has special meaning within the story.
4. The cover art ties into the story.

Here's what I didn't like:
1. The organization of the novel - the chronology - is a HOT MESS. I don't know why authors like to reveal stories in a crazy, non-linear order. I always felt a story should unfold for the reader. In this book, the first chapter is followed by a chapter that is somewhere in the future (I'm guessing about 30 years later). There are no year headings on the chapters so you have to read a while to try to figure out who's who and what's what and when that chapter is taking place.
2. There are too many main characters...two sets of parents/step-parents, four children from one family and two children from another. I found it hard to keep them apart (especially with the constantly shifting timelines).
3. Characters (and plot lines) and presented, then dropped, then (maybe) picked up again...but maybe at a different time in the story.
4. The reader is misled in some cases. For example, in one chapter one of the children dies and the reader is led to believe of one cause. Many chapters later you will find out the cause is something else entirely.
5. Some of the children in the story disappear (or briefly appear or re-appear) after a while leaving me feeling the book was unfinished.

So...I didn't love it or hate it. But it is hard for me to give a Patchett novel only three stars.

Troublesome
By Joyce Haworth
When Lawrence Stone first published this book in the late 1970s, it was unprecedented. By meticulously combing through thousands of documents, Stone appeared to have reconstructed the personal relationships and family structures of an age long gone. But that was 35 years ago, and historians have had lots of time to examine his more radical ideas, such as the notion that early modern families were cold and unconnected. Stone himself retreated from some of his theses after they were shown to be overstated or incorrect. A sampling of the current status of the debate over this book can be found at:

Given that, it's hard to know how much to lean on this book. Certainly, the details and anecdotes are excellent. Who knew that the English bussed each other on the lips when they greeted each other, at a time when the rest of Europe was more reticent? But this volume should be handled with care. It is in some ways a historical document of its own, redolent with the unmistakable scent of the turbulent 1970s.

Excellent information source for genealogists and historians
By A Customer
This densely written and lengthy book is sometimes difficult reading, but more than worth the effort! It is an excellent source of information for genealogists trying to understand the motivation of ancestors whose actions seem incomprehensible today. By providing detailed analysis of family relationships from 1500 to 1800 in England, Mr. Stone has given us all an insight into thought processes and values that are very different from our own. The book would be equally valuable for anyone trying to understand the everyday lives of people in another time, to historians, to authors doing research for historical novels or plays, or simply to anyone who wants to take the equivalent of a "ride in a time machine". This is an outstanding book and I highly recommend it, though not for light reading!

Sex in the Early Modern Times and What Not
By David Brockert
"The Family, Sex and Marriage in England 1500 - 1800" by Lawrence Stone
This is a truly unusual book. It is a history book, but it's subject matter is interesting, of course, but handled very well and scholarly. Mr. Stone does us all a service in studying and presenting this subject in this fashion. His book goes back through the history of society in regards of family, sex and marriage to show how it changed in perspective and purpose. The society of 16th century England was very different from that of 19th century England. The main differences were in purposes and roles people played within their society: for instance, at the beginning of the history, children were disposable; at the end of the history, they were loved and coddled.
The extraordinary amount of change in those three centuries is what is so amazing. We do not think that there has been a time that was very unlike our own in the raising of children, and yet, from the one example above, there has been a sea change in how children are treated and raised. The same can be said for relations between husband and wife, servant and lord, merchant and customer, etc. We just do not realize the change in values and society. It is probably because of the slowness, or the subtleness, of those changes.
There are some books that have come out in the last ten years or so about the homosexual relations some of the people had through the Middle Ages on until the middle 1800's. Now I wonder if the changes in societies attitude towards homosexuals has been as gradual and subtle so that we do not even remember the alternative was prevalent not too long ago?

From Library Journal
O'Hara (Find A Quiet Corner, Warner, 1995) runs Quiet Corner workshops in New York City. On the basis of her life experiences, she believes that finding serenity is not enough?that we also need to hear our true inner voices. This book represents her attempt to guide readers to that goal. She describes various ways of becoming aware, accepting, and taking action. O'Hara's ideas are basic, and the text is tepid. Much of it revolves around quiet-time thinking and preparing various writing exercises. Readers would do better with any of M. Scott Peck's "road" books (e.g., The Road Less Traveled). Recommended only where there is demand.?January Adams, Franklin Twp. P.L., Somerset, N.J.

Meditation advice with commericals thrown in
By A Customer
Another self help book offering meditation advice as a way to learn to hear your own voice. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it just has been done much better by others. On a technical level by Mark Epstein in his facinating books "Thoughts without a Thinker" and "Going to Pieces without Falling Apart" and Jon Kabat-Zinn on a more interpersonal level. What really ruined this book for me were the constant 'commericals' for her Quiet Corner products. Almost every page had references to what seems to have become a cottage industry for her in Quiet Corner seminars as well as her other books. It quickly became quite annoying so that I quit the book after 50 pages. The concepts in the book are a great idea, but has been done better elsewhere. Skip it.

Clear and Simple
By David Blacklock
This is a lovely book. Really simple and clear in its suggestions regarding finding a way to awareness and acceptance by paying quiet attention. The author's previous book, "Find a Quiet Corner" was similarly clear and direct in cutting through the mumbo-jumbo that so oftens surrounds books in this category. Nancy O'Hara has obviously practised what she is here preaching, she is not presenting a theoretical guide, but the results of her own experience, and that of the attendees at her "Quiet Corner" seminars. Very useful, highly recommended.

Deep, meaningful, easy to read guide to meditation.
By Candi or astrawser@rand.com
I recently saw this book in the hands of a tall, dark handsome stranger on a flight from Boston to Cleveland in mid-December 1998. I felt strongly led to ask this man if he was enjoying what he was reading. "I've liked all her books", he replied, referring to the author, Nancy O'Hara. We spoke briefly and I told him I intended to order this book from amazon.com and perhaps even write my own review for the web page. If you are reading this right now and you remember me, PLEASE contact me at my e-mail address today! I will have a new e-mail address after Feb 1, 1999 = strawser@nmedia.com. Let's discuss (or experience) these concepts!

From Publishers Weekly
The most enjoyable horror anthology of the year, this jumbo goody-sack disguised as a book is stuffed with Halloween-themed fiction and nonfiction edited by the founder/editor of Cemetery Dance (Chizmar) and the editor of the respected but defunct nonfiction horror mag The Scream Factory (Morrish). The book contains 55 entries (not counting original artwork), including nearly two dozen stories (half original), a novella reprint, about 30 original essays on "My Favorite Halloween Memory," a new poem by Ray Bradbury and three original essays on, respectively, the history, literature and cinema of Halloween. The list of contributors gathers just about every important writer in the field (other than King and Barker): Dean Koontz, Hugh B. Cave, Douglas Clegg, Richard Laymon, Poppy Z. Brite, Dennis Etchison, F. Paul Wilson, Ed Gorman, Peter Crowther, John Shirley, Douglas E. Winter, Thomas Ligotti, Ramsey Campbell and Peter Straub (with the novella, "Pork Pie Hat") are just a few. The insightful essays are by Paula Guran of e-newsletter Dark Echo fame ("A Short History of Halloween"), author Gary A. Braunbeck ("'First of All, It Was October...' An Overview of Halloween Films") and critic/anthologist Stefan Dziemianowicz ("Trick-or-Read"). The fiction is uniformly good, sometimes superb. The most seductive aspect of this book, however, is the Halloween memories, often potent snippets of childhood epiphanies (Elizabeth Engstrom remembers being abandoned, and growing up, one Halloween night in a junkyard filled with rats; Douglas Clegg recalls seeing, at age four, a witch fly across the face of the moon) that will bring back to every reader the autumnal magic of All Hallow's Eve. Excellent anthology
By James Nemeth
A perfect gift for your favorite horror and monster lover is October Dreams, a collection of new and reprinted fiction, along with various essays and reflections, all centering on everyone's favorite holiday, Halloween.
October Dreams carries over twenty fiction pieces (new versus reprint being about half and half), by many of the heaviest hitters in the field: Douglas Clegg, Poppy Z. Brite, Charles L. Grant, Peter Straub, Dean Koontz, Ramsey Campbell, Ray Bradbury, the late Richard Laymon and many, many others. Many of the authors also contribute short reflection pieces, detailing their favorite Halloween memories. Lastly, several essays explore such aspects of the holiday as its history, Halloween in literature, and a detailed look at "Halloween"-related movies.
I won't go into a "this story is great, that story sucked" litany, as such things are subjective. I can, however, say that the overall quality of the stories is very good. I found several to be flat-out excellent. Perhaps one of the best compliments one can pay this anthology is that I will be pursuing other works of many of the authors within this collection that I've heretofore been unfamiliar with, as a result of the impressiveness of their stories here.
The authors' Halloween remembrances run the gamut of emotions: from humorous to scary, nostalgic, and sorrowful. In perhaps the saddest memory, Halloween for Ray Bradbury will never again be the same.
Lastly, there are the essays. One, covering the history of Halloween, is entertaining and informative. Even the most knowledgeable Halloween expert may learn something new here. A well-researched piece covering Halloween fiction nicely scratches the surface of a topic that definitely needs many more pages. Lastly, an overview of Halloween films is one of those fun lists in which you're sure to disagree with the author at some point, hollering out: "How could he have left out: (fill in the blank)?"
The only noticeable misstep for the book, in my opinion, is the exclusion of any of the Halloween-themed tales from one of the undisputed masters, Robert Bloch.
Don't be scared off by this book's price tag. Considering the incredible lineup of genre authors included here, the quality of the work, and the fact that the book comes in at over 660+ pages, the book is a bargain. Don't pass this one up.

Finally a romance with adults and not twenty somethings
By Robin Snyder
This is a typical KA-land book where the alpha males shift from super sweet to semi-jerky at the drop of a hat…but all in an I’m a man and I’m going to provide and protect you kind of way. This is a place where normal rules don’t apply really.

Things to Expect in KA-Land

❣ - Ex’s are 5 shades of cray-cray and I mean CrAzY

❣ - The Hot guy will say something life shattering sweet one minute and then act like he is from another time the next and you’ll want to first kiss him and then kick him in the balls. That feeling goes a little back and forth but most of the stuff that is memorable is sweet.

***“Two kinds of women get under your skin. The ones who do damage, they don't feel good there but once you're stupid enough to let them in you got no choice but to take the time it takes to work them out. Then there are the ones who don't do damage, who feel good there, feed the muscle, the bone, the soul, not rip it or break it or burn it. The ones you don't wanna work out.”***

❣ - The underappreciated girl with a past will resist the initial allure of said hot guy because she has something tragic in her past or is slightly broken. But at least she is not 20 something….One of the best things about KAs MCs is that most of the time they are in their 30s and 40s.

***“All my life, or as long as I can remember, I thought something special was going to happen to me. I just had this feeling, deep in my bones. I didn’t know what it was but it was going to be beautiful, spectacular, huge.” I leaned in further. “All… my… life.” I shook my head again and put my hand on the bar. “It didn’t. I waited and it didn’t happen. I waited more and it didn’t happen. I waited more and it still didn’t happen. I tried to make it happen and it still didn’t happen. Now I know it isn’t going to. It’s never going to happen because there isn’t anything special out there to happen.”***

❣ - The KA heroine will freak out at some point and time and ramble on in a cute or over informative way.

❣ - There will be sex…lots of hot sex…even some in the shower and that is when I know this isn’t real life. Because have you ever tried to have sex in the shower…it is slippery and I think you are more likely to get a concussion than anything else.

❣ - At some point there will be some crass talk…I personally look forward to this. It is usually dirty and mostly thrown in the face of someone who has wronged the MC so I totally look forward to the verbal smack down. There were a few of them in Sweet Dreams and they were all awesome.

❣ - You can usually count on a kidnapping, girl fight, alpha dominance fight or a tasering. If you are lucky you get a combo of them.

Sweet Dreams worked for me for a few reasons. I liked Laurie most of the time. She had a bad marriage and is a bit gun shy but she stands up for herself doesn’t let anyone walk all over her and is good to her friends. There is also Tate who made me happy just a little more than he made me angry but overall he just did it for me. It was probably all the crass talking.

The murder mystery while interesting totally plays second fiddle to the love story. This IS love story first and foremost with a mystery. Still I always love learning about the pasts of the characters to see why they are both a little broken and each one helps to fix the other. Tate’s history was just as tragic as Laurie’s was but in a different way.

KA did fortunately reign in all of the descriptions in this one. There are still a lot and I always know what a character is wearing, or the general vibe of a room but she didn’t go nearly as overboard as she did in The Gamble.

The side characters and the small town always add a lot to the story and this is no exception. I love that I feel like these are real places and you could go and visit Carnal and have a drink at Bubba’s and run in to Jim-Billy there and maybe watch Twyla throw down some attitude at bad tipping customers.

All and all this is one of my favorite KA books to date.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how the characters were older and seemed to know what they wanted. Laurie went after what she wanted and she was not afraid to speak her mind. I can really relate to that because I am known to speak my mind. Tate! (sigh...) Who doesn't love an alpha male who loves his family. Tate pissed me off at first just like he did Laurie but I love how she dished it right back to him and he seemed truly sorry for his words. Once they started dating I fell more in love with his character. Overall a great book that I read within a day. I could not seem to put the book down. 5 stars

Kristen Ashley books are always addicting!
By Texas Book Lover
I think this is the first book I have ever read where the hero has a beard, not just scruff but a full sexy beard! Seriously HOT!!! This book like the first in the series (even though honestly the two have so little in common I'm not sure they need to be part of the same series) is terrific!

Tate is a very badass biker, bounty hunter hero (among other things) and Lauren is fresh out of a bad marriage and fresh into Carnal, Colorado. The last thing she expects to do is meet and hookup with Tate but when she does she sets her mind to become a biker babe in training. Add in lots of secrets, a great cast of characters, plus a serial killer on the loose and it makes for a great book.

Anyone who’s read a Kristen Ashley books knows her style of writing is to write very long books with run-on sentences that tend to be repetitive among other editing issues. But never doubt that the end result is that her books have some of the hottest heroes, amazing stories and are always addictive and leave you going back for more!
