Enlightenment the easy way...

Given the success of the first volume, 'Politically Correct Bedtime Stories', James Finn Garner took another journey into fairytale land to find a revisionist's dream of reframed stories, and assembled them into the volume 'Once Upon a More Enlightened Time'. Like the first volume, this one holds nothing sacred, highlighting both the excesses of prejudice in the past while exposing the excesses of the politically correct currents of today.
Once again, the tone is set from the start in the Introduction by Garner: 'At the outset, I would like to apologise sincerely for the success of my last book. The number of trees that voicelessly gave their lives so that my resource-greedy publisher and I could meet retail demand was truly appalling, and quite likely contributed to the global warming that gave those of us in the Northern Hemisphere such an unseasonably warm winter.'
Garner misses the opportunity here to remind us of the disparity of wealth between hemispheres, but beyond that, he doesn't miss much. The titles of the stories will give you insight:
- A Politically Correct Alphabet
- Hansel and Gretel
- The Ant and the Grasshopper
- The Princess and the Pea
- The Little Mer-persun (Mer-maid is a demeaning title)
- The Tortoise and the Hare
- Puss in Boots
- Sleeping Persun of Better-than-Average Attractiveness (to call her a beauty demeans all others)
- The City Mouse and the Suburban Mouse (the countryside having been ravaged and now no longer exists close to cities; the country mouse has become suburban)
The politically correct alphabet I will list below--this gives a flavour of the rest of the text.
A is an Activity itching to fight
B is a Beast with its animal rights
C was a Cripple (now differently abled)
D is a Drunk who is 'liquor-enabled'
and so forth...
Garner hastens to add that, of course, the traditional ordering of the letters does not in any way imply that 'A' is more better or deserving a letter than X, Y, or Z.
Garner's publicity blurb says that he is called 'a master of the tour de force' by The Washington Post and 'a smart-alec, mealy-mouthed creep' by The London Daily Telegraph, yet feels the truth lies somewhere in between.
These stories will be loved by anyone who doesn't take life too seriously. Nothing is sacred here--be prepared to find something in yourself in here.

That Tortoise used Performing Enhancement Drugs

This sequel to Politically Correct Bedtime Stories introduces the reader to more politically correct fairy tales. Hansel and Gretel and the Tortoise and the Hare are my favourites. This is on par with the first book but avoid the next book in the series Politically Correct Holiday Stories as it does not live up to the standards of these two. Also read Apocalypse Wow by the same author.
Other great versions of fairytales can be found in Once Upon a Crime and the book called Whatever happened to...? The Ultimate Sequels.

Fun, but just more of the same

Given the popularity and originality of Garner's previous work, "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories," a sequel was all but inevitable. But the brilliance of that first effort was in its freshness and surprise. Now that the feline animal companion is out of the bag, another book on the same topic was bound to be disappointing.

Garner rewrites old fairy tales (Hansel and Gretel, The Little Mermaid) and fables (The Ant and the Grasshopper, the Tortoise and the Hare) to echo the sensitivities of the far, far left. He tongue-in-cheekedly uses spellings that avoid the word "man" ("persun" for "person," "wommon" for "woman,") and has his heroes and heroines (excuse me, she-roes) adopt anti-capitalist, pro-environment and pro-animal rights stances. But (sigh) it has all been done before. What Garner needed to do was to take his lampoon to a new level. He accomplishes this one time, with "Puss in Boots," a satire on the American political system, in which artful consultants spin empty-headed candidates into electoral gold.

Garner is a clever man, a skilled writer and a gifted satirist. This work is OK, but I'm anxious to see him move in new directions.

This book is groundbreaking on many levels. The sigils are not based on the common patterns ascribed to Goetia, ceremonial magic or chaos magic. Rather, they are unique patterns that touch the user on a visceral level, tapping into a portion of the mind that most do not, dare not, unleash. A casual glance may leave you thinking these sigils are very specific, and in some sense they are, but the potential for application in all parts of your life will be readily apparent to the astute reader. I wanted to put aside for a moment the tremendous respect that I have for The Sorceress Cagliastro's previous books and focus on this one, which isn't easy. Everything she has written is brilliant, and those books are in good company with this one.

'25 SIGILS, Dark Circles: From the IRON RING' offers a fresh and insightful approach to presenting this material in a format where, if you use it properly, will not be just another occult book collecting dust on your shelf. You will hone it into a powerful talisman that you will continue learning from for years. Unlike too many other people in this field of study, the development of the student's abilities is the focus of the work... Not the desire to write a bestseller and make lots of money. A fantastic adventure through time, space and sacred secrets

Sarah and Alexander is one of those stories that brings to life the characters and situations so vividly that you immediately start assigning actors and actresses to play them in your mind.

The heroine, Sarah Manning discovers the secrets of her lineage in an adventure that spans from when her grandmother Rose is saved from the Nazis in WWII into the future. The story brilliantly intertwines the best of what you would read a sci-fi/time travel, spy or conspiracy novel for; taking along you on a DaVinci Code-esque mission. This book is a fun, touching, mystical and gripping page turner that reinvents the classic battle against good and evil.

Sarah and Alexander - A Consciousness-Creating Endeavor

Ellie Crystal is a phenomenal writer, visionary, and creator. For almost 20 years I have known Ellie in her various capacities: as philosopher, teacher, writer, and healer. Her book, Sarah & Alexander, is a manifestation of all of her enormous creativity and vision. A project originally started in 1989, it was part of a guided mission of public awakening and consciousness as given to Ellie by Z. Her book, Sarah and Alexander synthesizes and integrates all of the crucial pieces of the "reality puzzle" - time travel, loops, space-time, consciousness, programming, politics, etc., while still being an addictive page turner - a feat only few writers are truly able to master.

Sarah and Alexander is a much needed book at such a crucial point in time - not simply because of its staying power, but more importantly because of the vital project it takes on - to awaken all who are reading into the necessary higher reality and consciousness that is crucial for this generation. I am grateful to have been a part of the original creation of the book and look forward to the realization of her inspired project into a feature film.

A Brilliant Blueprint of the Science of Change

When Stephen Covey labeled this new book "an instant classic," I knew it was a must-read for me.

But I was floored at how brilliant this book really is.

Many books deal with some aspect or particular technique of change in people. Influencer is radically different: it presents a complete structural blueprint of the science of change, and takes you step by step through the critical factors behind change and how to apply them to any problem.

Instead of endless dry facts or empty clich�s, Influencer breaks down its major points chapter by chapter, illustrating them with a detailed analysis of several real-world case studies of seemingly insurmountable change problems, including Delancy, a rehab center for hard-core criminal drug addicts which has an astonishing success rate of over 90%. Interspersed are personal and family case studies, research, and history all engagingly written in a well-organized, coherent style. At the end of each chapter is a summary of key concepts covered.

Influencer immediately helped me understand both my own thinking processes toward change and those of others, and jump-started good ideas for both my personal growth and solving several business issues. Influencer is by far the most original and useful book I have read this year. Highly recommended.

Influenced me!

The principles in this book have the potential to change the world - by changing behaviors of individuals, families, communities and nations.

The authors teach us how to create the change we'd like to see in the world using a deceptively simple framework (e.g. "Make the Undesirable Desirable" and "Design Rewards and Demand Accountability"). Many of the concepts are intuitive - the problem is that I had never intuited them before, much less put them all together in a framework I could act on. They support the framework with sound theory from behavioral psychology and demonstrate it with real-world examples of people who are solving big, important problems. Throughout it all they use a straight-forward conversational style and a great sense of humor.

But be warned: It's not a self-help, positive-mental-attitude, quick-fix, rah! rah! book, and it's not a fast, easy read - it's not supposed to be. The book deals with powerful concepts and it took me some time to think through the implications and how I could apply them. I re-read some chapters several times and spent time writing out how I could apply the principles (I usually do this in the margins - but with Influencer I ended up using a journal since there was so much to write about).

It's well worth the time and effort - I'm excited by the results I'm seeing personally as I apply the concepts in my roles as a father, husband, church leader and business leader.

Change takes work

After teaching readers how to have "crucial conversations" to share ideas, resolve conflicts, and promote change, our five authors begin "Influencer" by turning that idea around. Talking, they remind us, often is not the best way to convince people to abandon old behaviors and start doing things differently, and can in fact be counterproductive if people start to resist or resent the idea you want to change them. It's sort of self-evident when you put it that way ... but on the other hand, once rational argument, hectoring, and pleading have failed, many of us feel disarmed. If you can't "talk them into it," what's left to try?

Given the title and subtitle, you could think "Influencer" is Dale Carnegie for a new generation. But it's actually quite a lot more than that. "The power to change anything" the authors describe is not a "These aren't the droids you're looking for" Jedi mind trick. Nor will you have everything you need to achieve your goals as soon as you finish reading. These are tools for promoting Big Ideas -- the examples the authors give include eliminating the ghastly guinea worm, promoting condom use in Thailand's sex trade, and turning around the lives of thousands of hardened gang members -- and so the first impression that the reader will take away from this is that changing minds and hearts requires hard work and commitment on both sides of the equation.

The authors argue that changing ingrained behavior requires people to answer two questions: "Can I make the change?" and "Is it worth the effort?" "Influencer" draws from psychology, organizational theory, history, sociology, and other disciplines to isolate the key motives that drive behavior. Armed with that information, they say, influencers have the lever they need to move mountains. It still won't be easy -- identifying the relevant "vital behaviors" alone can take time, including, they suggest, poring over scientific journals and other published research. But if change came through the flip of a switch, we wouldn't need this book in the first place.

Where "Influencer" is weakest, I thought, was in tying the authors' insights together in a way that leads us through from start to finish. Though the examples they give and stories they tell illustrate individual points and methods, and are certainly impressive examples of achievement, I never connected with them on an emotional level. Perhaps it's because the authors never succeded in convincing *me* I should want to change my life and become an Influencer. Maybe I don't have enough Big Ideas.

Little of the content of this book is truly original (for example, you could probably substitute "Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die" by Chip Heath and Dan Heath [Random House, 2007] for a good portion of chapter 3 at least). What will probably make "Influencer" influential is the authors' pulling all that information together and presenting it in a way that will make Influencers-to-be feel like they're taking in hard science. Will they then be willing and able to put in the work required -- and will their Big Ideas deserve it? Answering that will take far more than one volume to sort out.

Alex Lamb has crafted a terrific debut novel. If the subsequent volumes are as good as this one then Lamb will surely be prominent in many an SF fan's bookcase. Starburst Magazine Alex Lamb's debut, Roboteer is hands down an awesome debut. Science FIction is a saturated genre but Roboteer breaks through it and, well smashes through with is with some very cool new ideas... From the big picture of world building down to the critical features of mechanisms that make it twist and turn, the technology, and most importantly the characters, everything is shows until into the fine detail. I am looking forward to reading more of Alex Lamb's books, if this is just the start, hang on to your hats! tHE bOOK pLANK Although Lamb draws everything together in a satisfying way, there is clearly room for much more to be told about this universe and its characters. I don't know whether a sequel is planned or under way, but I hope so as I look forward to travelling there again! SF Crowsnest a fast paced, action adventure of a novel, with a good core protagonist/antagonist, within a universe I'm dying to hear more about. Worth picking up! SF&F Reviews Lamb's got so many ideas that they almost spill off the pages, and telling the story from both sides is a smart way of balancing the argument. Its plot is enormously enjoyable, putting us on the edge of our seat for much of the time. Alex Lamb writes so well and he also knows how to engage us with his characters. It is a very visual novel. There are moments of wonder, which I need in science fiction, and there are also great mysteries - none of which I've mentioned here as you need to discover them for yourselves. Above all else, though, Roboteeer is great fun! For Winter's Nights Lamb's worldbuilding is excellent: we see multiple levels of society in both tranches of humanity through assorted characters that are deftly drawn... Lamb leaves you wanting to learn more about all the societies he introduces... Sf Bulletin with cracking storytelling, top notch prose and a good helping cracking universe building all round gives the reader a book that is fun to spend time between the sheets with. About the Author
Alexander Lamb splits his time between writing science fiction, software engineering, teaching improvised theater, running business communication skills workshops, and conducting complex systems research.

He currently lives in Princeton, NJ with his wife, Genevieve Graves, an astrophysicist also at the university there, and their three month old son.

Exicing first novel

Alex Lamb uses a standard trope of a future Earth gone theocratic, trying to conquer and convert its former colonies. Galatea, a world still being terraformed, is vastly outnumbered. It has mods for people to make them stronger, faster, smarter and to connect to the robots around them. Even for a Roboteeer (paper from Gollancz) Will Kuno-Mone is unusual enjoying interacting not only with the robots under his control, but also the rest of the crew of the stealth ship Ariel. Earth has developed a sun-tap weapon, and the Ariel follows its commander to an amazing discovery, a world built by aliens. The new weapon is from alien technology, and as the crew of the Ariel discovers, created by transcended alien species. Species willing to self-edit are allowed to grow. The sun-taps marks the stars of those species unable to progress and allows the transcended to wipe them out. So will, also being modified by the transcended and the rest of his crew have to somehow stop a powerful Earth and return it to sanity. Getting there is very exciting with near-miss excitement as our heroes are captured and escape only to be captured again. Lots of fun with a solid ending. Review printed by Philadelphia Weekly Press

Extremely enjoyable romp through the galaxy and the nervous system

It's easy to say there's nothing new under the sun, but a good sci-fi writer knows that our sun is just one star among many, and as many variations can exist as there are stars. When an author has a strong love for science, Artificial Intelligence and social issues and wraps it up in a very readable novel, you've got something for which it is very worth sitting up and taking notice. I loved the ideas presented and explored in this novel, and even more, I love the fact that it's very smooth and enjoyable read.

I'm very much looking forward to further works by the author and hopefully new books in this series will be available soon.

For fans of: William Gibson & Arthur C. Clark (by that I mean people who love both authors and would love to see them collaborate on a modern novel)

Great, interesting book. Well worth your time and money.

Great book, interesting story and great imagination. I really enjoyed the science part of this. The only thing that I could complain about in this book is that it really doesn't leave room for a sequel. Damn shame that. I thought that the characters were well developed and I could easily understand most of their motivations (hard to get to with just one book). I highly recommend this book and look forward to more by this author. Loved the editing! Well done

Another useful book

This book has one unusual strength: most poses are shown from many angles, up to about two dozen in some cases. This gives extra insight into unusual foreshortening and into how the figure articulates.
The weakness of this book is that, in order to show so many different views on a page, each figure photo is relatively small. This is especially disappointing because the models are all Japanese, where most pose books show only European features and figures. This book never meant to document details of faces, though, so I really can't complain,

--Pose File 2 is basically a sequel to Pose file one. I have noticed that the poses are not only different, but also just a little more dynamic.--Unlike the later series, there appears to be no major theme, (I still can't read that Kanji) but it is a thorough book nonetheless.--I recommend that you get the later "themed" series, and then get 2 to complete your collection. --Definitely useful, but don't rush this one...
