A good guide for rageaholics

This book helped me better understand how my psyche works. I have intermittent explosive disorder and psychiatric wards have never explained to me how to deal with the tantrums the way this book has. It's far from a cure all, but it has helped me cope and learn why certain situations cause me the stress that they do. The book works in tandem with the breathing exercises that I do on a regular basis to prevent any meltdowns. If you got anger related impulse problems and have a few dollars then give this book a try. It helped me and it might help you too.

Good and some helpful suggestions, but was hoping for something with more focus on solid tools for ending rage, and for change. This book focuses more heavily on the types of rage and identifying what types the reader might have.

A great practical guide on anger with steps and methods to change to a happier future

Overall, a very helpful book for understanding anger and the original fears and experiences that could lead to anger.

The break out of rage into four main categories -- survival rage, impotence rage, abandonment rage, and shame rage -- was really useful for looking at the nuances of the different types. The example statements of people with that type of anger is very helpful in identifying your own anger. Understanding the different factors allows you to understand how they could combine together to form your unique cocktail of insecurities or fears.

The book also has some great practical advice and exercises to changing away from anger to changing your underlying beliefs and filters towards a more positive, safe, and loving message about people. It guides you to consider your life and people today so that you can leave your past hurts in the past. The author doesn't try to coax you into feeling like you should feel safe with everyone, or naively trust. He encourages you to accept the reality that the world is safe enough, even if that means you make your world safe first, and trust in your ability to find safe people.

I would only caution about the section about accepting impotence rage. I think the example for a situation on accepting impotence rage should have been something more permanent or unchangeable like a health problem rather than what appears to be a very toxic and destructive relationship. I spent a lot of time mentally arguing with the suggestions to accept that toxic situation, because I still believed there was more that could be done or should be done to protect the children as well as the example individual. For that particular example, the book misses its own point of having to be in an actually safe environment to not rage or misassesses that the husband is actually very dangerous and harmful, even if he isn't raging. If possible, I would encourage trying to work your own example of a truly unchangeable or permanent problem instead of accepting the book's example.

Sacred and Profane Love

There is a Jean-Luc Godard segment in one of those compilation films so popular in Europe during the 1960s. Imagine a high class brothel of the future -- located, as I recall, at an airport. The client requests an assignation and draws a prostitute who all but rapes him. He tries to open a conversation with her, but she is all action and no talk. The client protests to the management and draws another one who dresses in frills like a character from Jane Austen and recites romantic poetry. You've probably already guessed what happens: This one is all talk and no action.
I yield to no one in my admiration of Balzac, whom I consider one of the greatest story-tellers of all time. It is very obvious that the character of Madame Blanche-Henriette de Mortsauf meant something special to the author in his life: Her piety and fine-tuned sensibility, however, don't come across well in our time. Women who suffer endlessly and fritter their lives away in sighs tend to give rise to a frustrated "Oh, come off it already!"
The opposite of Mme de Mortsauf is the fascinating Arabelle, Marchionesse of Dudley, who conquers the narrator, Felix de Vandenesse, and keeps him in thrall with "caresses never before enjoyed by any man." Alas, Balzac uses the multi-talented Arabelle primarily as a warning to all Frenchmen how cold-hearted the British are. We are tantalized but far from fulfilled.
Call me a dirty old man, if you will, but I would rather that Balzac and Felix spent more time with Dudley and a whole lot less with Mme de Mortsauf. As it is, the latter dies horribly of her excessive sensibility, and Felix walks away from her grave resolved to live a life of which the angelic Mme de Mortsauf would have approved.
We all know that Balzac made no such resolution in his own life. Despite his monkish pretensions, the author spent all his life pursuing women. When, after a multi-year courtship, he finally snared his Countess, he died within a year.
It sounds as if I did not like LILY OF THE VALLEY. Far from it, I liked it a great deal; but do not see it as one of the author's more successful works. And yet, even at his worst, Balzac is better than most writers at their best, as when Felix muses "I loved an angel and a demon, equally beautiful, one of them adorned with all the virtues which hatred of our imperfections induces us to hurt; the other with all the vices which our selfishness prompts us to deify." Read it and judge for yourself.

beautiful love story

This was apparently Balzac's favourite work and I can see why. It's written as a letter from a young man to his lover who has demanded to know his past. Felix has a sad early life, rejected by his mother (a theme Balzac refers to in 'a woman of thirty'). But he then meets the beautiful Mme de Mortsauf and the developing love between them- maternal at first, later passionate, yet at her insistence always chaste- forms the main part of the book. The description of the Mortsauf family with the irascible, almost insane husband, who makes his wife's life so hard, and the two fragile children, and of the Touraine countryside are exquisite. The years of unfulfilled love roll by and Felix falls prey to a sensuous Englishwoman,causing much torment to his true love. 'Lady Arabelle was the mistress of the flesh; Mme de Mortsauf was the wife of the spirit'. It's a beautiful book and finishes with a short response from Felix's lover to his revelations...Balzac at his best.

Though a bit Touchy-Feely

Though I felt that this book was a bit too touchy-feely for my own taste, it did have a lot of valuable insights into the actors mind and how to work with them in a collaborative sense. If you are a director that does not believe in running with the actors own take on a character, then this book would be painful for you to try to read. Nevertheless, if you are looking to have a truly collaborative experience (not all of us are), the advice contained within is very solid.
Weston breaks the process of working with actors down to how to give concise words to help get a performance. She further spends time developing adjustment techniques. I think this book is particularly strong in its discussions on script breakdown, and having multiple approaches to playing a scene. It gives some helpful advice on casting as well, and really challenges a director to cast the best person in a role as opposed to the one that they feel "nailed the part" based on ones preconceived notions.
The biggest weakness in this book is that really favors the actor over the director at times, and leaves me asking (as a director) why would I want to have this relationship. I do not believe, as Weston proports, that a director should always allow the actor to find the voice of his or her character without explicit direction. Nevertheless, it certainly challenged my own technique, and I am a better filmmaker from having read it.

Director Beware

A practical, technique oriented introduction to directing actors. It's really from an actor's perspective, and has a very condescending attitude toward directors. But this is useful. The anecdotes are really enjoyable. Not a substitute for acting and directing experience, just one set of possible tools to try to put into practice. Harold Clurman's "On Directing" is of the same aesthetic perspective, but at the same time broader and more succinct, and more sympathetic to directors.

The Only Book on Directing I Have Ever Loved

Completely unpretentious. Thoroughly knowledgeable and confident. Allows you to discover the concepts yourself, rather than spouting them at you. And yet...also completely able to be referenced.
In other words... the best book on directing I've ever read. The only I will ever recommend. To actors and directors alike.
I hate to call it "hype," but after reading the book feverously (which, for a book on directing, is almost unheard of), it is safe to believe it here. All the endorsements on the back cover from people working "in the industry" no longer ring of marketing salesmanship, but of complete honesty. There are few things in this world I would endorse, given the chance. This is one of them.
I don't want to say it "changes you." But I will say I had more thoughts and ideas OF MY OWN while reading this book that ever before. The reason? It's like any craft: if you sit down to make something, you usually don't really know what to make specifically until you get to know your tools. Then--once you know what you can be done, what things are available to you to use, the ideas of what you can do with these tools start flowing.
I'd like to thank Ms. Weston for introducing me to some of the tools. Actually, I have thanked her. She called me back. I'm still floored by that.

Really fun

It was fun to read. Some of it was sort of dry in places and the humour was sort of over your head types of funny unless you understand about Bollywood and Indian culture. I loved it. Would recommend to friends definitely just have a WiFi connection handy so you can Google up small things. The book is in english but has some hindi phrases and sentences

About the Author
Dr Fitzpatrick is a Reader in Biomedical Engineering at The University of West London, where he also leads the Biomedical Engineering Research Group. He has a BEng degree in Electronic Engineering, a PhD in Bioengineering and is a Chartered Electronics Engineer and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

His primary research interest is in the use of Functional Electrical Simulation (FES) for the restoration of bladder function and restoration of gait in stroke and spinal cord injured patients. His research focuses on the design and development of implantable medical systems. His recent book 'Analogue Design and Simulation using OrCAD Capture and PSpice', also published by Elsevier, has sold worldwide to highly acclaimed reviews in numerous prestigious electronic engineering journals such as EDN and Electronic Times and is officially endorsed by Cadence Design Systems.
