A laugh-out-loud series about a boywho is a bigger trouble magnet than Bart Simpson andDennis the Menacestuck together

I, Dougal Trump, am dead. Ok, I'm not actually dead, but if I'm not very careful, I soon will be. In this first book, sports-loving Dougal Trump finds himself at risk from the mysterious creature living in thebackyard shed. Nobody believes him but as a precaution, he sets upon writing his will—rewarding those who help him, disinheriting those who get on his bad side, and fielding constant pleas from friends and associates ("Cool will, Dougie! Can I have your playstation?—George") Meanwhile, as limbs and windows alike are broken by roguesoccer ballsand unhinged canines, Dougal finds himself in all sorts of trouble.

The book is generally a great resource for the history of medicine and public health
By Edwood Brice
I've never rented from Amazon. This was my first book. It arrived obviously used; some pages were battered and the cover was torn but that was to be expected for the quality rating that was displayed when I rented. The book is generally a great resource for the history of medicine and public health. I've definitely had some eye-opening moments as I've gone through it. I will rent from Amazon again in the future. This was a good experience.

O, Beautiful End: Memorial Poems, by Geoffrey Shugen Arnold

"O, Beautiful End gives poignant, delicate and personal consideration to individuals who have died, yet transcends the particulars and extends to all deaths... these poems are Buddhist teachings as well as tributes," says Anne Waldman in her foreword to this first book by Zen teacher Geoffrey Shugen Arnold Sensei.

This moving collection of memorial poems is both celebratory and elegiac, eloquent in its attempt to express the ineffable, full of rich and subtle detail yet universal. But as beautiful and evocative as these poems are, their real power lies in their ability to give voice to the most fundamental questions about the nature of impermanence, of life and death, delusion and enlightenment. And in doing so, they indeed fulfill Shugen Sensei's wish that they may "offer something worthwhile for [our] own living and dying, here, today."

The supreme importance of life and death
By River woman
A line from the Zen prayer called Evening Gatha states: "Life and death are of supreme importance". Zen Buddhism seeks to embody teachings on impermanence into daily practice, and are seen here as well, in the delicate whisperings of memorial poems. O, Beautiful End is Shugen Sensei's heart, his artistic receptivity to the voices and images of the newly dead whom he has personally known. He asks in a poem for Valerie, "How are we to see this fleeting world"? A most provocative question, when contemplated.

Each poem transitions from Shugen's inner vision - from a poetic image unique to each person now deceased - to a resolution of any doubt that Eternal Spring is just that, for both the living and the dead. Eternal Spring is ever present, just a breath of difference in the worlds of the living and non-living. Shugen sees the dead alive, still manifesting, impacting; teaching us.

This is a handsome, lovely to hold, well-crafted book of 26 poems. A particularly moving turn are the two poems for Daido Roshi, Shugen's beloved teacher. One, on the first page, the other, on the last, like hands in prayer, they hold and embrace all the activities of the sangha and its teachers. To this reviewer, these two poems are the most intimate of all, revealing the depth of Shugen's committment to his life as a teacher, and his boundless gratitude to Daido. One experiences Shugen's own pain and loss at Daido's death. This books confirms the essence of Zen alive, spontaneously manifesting the deeper experiences of life and death as a living practice.

Water on dry ground
By Omnivorous Reader
It is so simple. I am not a poet. But I have lost people that I have loved as we all do.
This book sets that place between the grief of the unimagineable loss and the vivid remembering that is the love you will always have, complicated and specific to the person gone.

I feel like I met each person addressed here, but also felt like he was helping me come up with a language to
think about those of mine recently gone.

I guess this Zen Master thing must have something to it.
Devestating and healing, all at the same time.

Poems that heal
By Carefulwriter
All of us have lost a loved one. But few of us use that experience to help us question and hopefully see something about the nature of life and of death. It is clear that for Shugen Arnold every person and every thing is a vehicle for this kind of exploration, and that the truths he has experienced are communicated in these beautiful poems.

I don't know the people he writes about, and yet every time I read this collection I am inexplicably moved and poked in the best possible way. What is this life about? What is my place in it? And how do I understand death?

I am grateful for this powerful yet subtle reminder of life's impermanence and for Shugen's eloquence in portraying it. A collection of poems that will not disappoint you.

Writing Art History: Disciplinary Departures, by Margaret Iversen, Stephen Melville

Faced with an increasingly media-saturated, globalized culture, art historians have begun to ask themselves challenging and provocative questions about the nature of their discipline. Why did the history of art come into being? Is it now in danger of slipping into obsolescence? And, if so, should we care?

In Writing Art History, Margaret Iversen and Stephen Melville address these questions by exploring some assumptions at the discipline’s foundation. Their project is to excavate the lost continuities between philosophical aesthetics, contemporary theory, and art history through close readings of figures as various as Michael Baxandall, Martin Heidegger, Jacques Lacan, and Alois Riegl. Ultimately, the authors propose that we might reframe the questions concerning art history by asking what kind of writing might help the discipline to better imagine its actual practices—and its potential futures.
