About the Author
Nancy Reisman's debut novel, The First Desire, was a New York Times Notable Book and a recipient of the Goldberg Award from the Foundation for Jewish Culture. Her story collection, House Fires, won the Iowa Award for Short Fiction. Her short fiction has appeared in many journals and anthologies, including Tin House, Glimmer Train, the Yale Review, SubTropics, Michigan Quarterly Review, Kenyon Review, Five Points, Narrative, The Best American Short Stories (2001), and The O'Henry Award Stories (2005). Reisman has received fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Tennessee Commission on the Arts, the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. She teaches at Vanderbilt University and lives in Nashville, TN.

Potentially moving story is not so.

Reisman is a clean, precise writer who kept me turning the page in the hope that her characters, who I got to know well, would grow in depth and self knowledge; never happened. This story skated on top of the ice of life the whole way through - very disappointing for such well articulated and described individuals and situations.

A intriguing story, "told" by the author, not the characters.

I read the glowing review in the Sunday New York Times Book Review June 28th, 2015. I liked the title.wanted to get involved in the lives of these characters, in the family, what happens to them, the story. I looked forward to finding myself pulled inside the the characters' lives through the point of view of the protagonist(s). . Alas, Nancy Reisman "tells" the story herself. I'd have loved if one of the main character's voice "showed" me the story through her or his eyes, his or her senses, feelings, thoughts, dialog, . I thought that the publisher, Tin House ,would have published a more intimate writing style rather than keeping me, the reader, at a distance with dated omniscient point of view. The writing is lovely "telling." The story is there, but didn't take me on the promised journey. I put the book down and walked away, disappointed.

Exquisite. Life as a series of transitions, an illusion that never stands still

Trompe L’Oeil (i.e., Optical Illusion), by Nancy Reisman, is an exquisite emotional and literary portrait of a family. The plot follows the lives of the Murphy family over the course of approximately thirty-five years. There’s James, the father; Nora, the mother; Theo, the oldest child and only son; Katy, the second child; Molly, the child who was killed in a pedestrian accident when she was four years old; and eventually, Sara and Dalia, two daughters born in quick succession after Molly’s death. The Murphys are an affluent, educated, and artistic New England family with ties to Boston, Cambridge, Wellesley, and Cape Cod. By all intents and purposes, they’re an ordinary privileged family made unique by having been forced to weather the extraordinary crisis of a child’s death.

At the beginning of the book, seemingly at the peak of the family’s happiness and vigor, Molly is tragically run over and killed by a truck while dashing across a street in Rome during a family vacation. She was only four years old. In an instant, the illusion of the family’s perfect life and expected future vanishes. Can one event change everything? Can one tragic event propel every individual in the family—both existing and not yet born—on to another trajectory? Can it keep affecting each life repeatedly and endlessly into the future?

If you read this elegant and sublime novel, you’ll come away answering, “Why, yes, of course!” The novel will help you understand and experience all the subtle ways that this can be true.

If there is a purpose or theme to this novel, it seems to be a demonstration that we are all in a state of perpetual transition; that life is an illusion that never stands still; that the “world as one knows it is only the world of a moment.”

This novel is told in the past tense by an anonymous narrator. At first, I thought the narrator was the author and that I would be reading a typical third-person omniscient narration. But that didn’t happen. And I was confused. And to add to the confusion, the author keep interjecting random strange chapters into the novel, each focusing on a very detailed physical and emotional description of different famous works of art. These short art chapters (there are 13 of them in a novel with a total of 76 chapters)—see the list of the art works at the end of this review—were narrated in the second person, i.e., using “you” as the voice. They exist, perhaps as a literary device, to pull the reader intimately into the novel, to make us believe that we are the ones doing the observing of each artwork…and then, by projection, that we are the fly-on-the-wall voyeurs, intimately peeking in on the lives of the Murphy family.

The primary narrator is never conclusively revealed. It could be the author or one of the characters in the novel. If so, it is no doubt Nora, because she emerges as the book’s main character and is the one most interested in art. Regardless, the narrator is human, not God-like. The narrator infers all human thought and emotions. The narrator is a keen analytical observer of life, nothing more. In some ways, the narrator is like a person in an art gallery. The narrator studies each scene in the lives of this family just like a visitor to an art gallery might stand in front of a painting and study it carefully, trying to infer all knowledge that can be inferred from the slightest clue.

This is an emotionally rich and meditative novel. The imagery is as precise and expressive as any of the famous works of art described in the thirteen art chapters. A great deal of care was taken in choosing exactly how each scene is described. Every word has purpose and weight.

This is an exquisite novel of subtle beauty and abundant depth. If it were a reading assignment in an advanced contemporary American literature seminar, I could think of any number of major concepts contained within it that easily could lend themselves to academic analysis.

As promised, here is a list of the famous works of art that are described in detail within this book. I suggest that you do an Internet image search on each work and have it in front of you, to study, while you read each of these chapters. Doing this will significantly increase your reading pleasure. It will also help pull you inside the story, inside the lives of these characters, so you become that analytical and empathetic “fly-on-the-wall voyeur” that the author want you to become. If there is any connection between these works of art and the story within the novel, it is that the main character, Nora, keeps a beloved shoebox full of museum gallery postcards of famous works of art just like these. She takes the box out and studies her art treasure photos whenever she needs quiet time by herself to recharge her emotional strength.

About the Author
Ronald Mak wrote the earlier editions of this very successful book as well as The Martian Principles for Successful Enterprise Systems: 20 Lessons Learned from NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Mission (also published by Wiley). He is also the author of Java Number Cruncher: The Java Programmer's Guide to Numerical Computing. He develops advanced software systems for organizations from startups to NASA. Currently a research staff member at the IBM Almaden Research Center, he also teaches compiler writing and software engineering at San Jos� State University.

An excellent book for learning how to implement an interpreter/compiler

The book of Ronald Mak is simply excellent.
It develops very clearly the techniques to build a parser,
an interpreter, a source-level debugger and a compiler for the
Java Virtual Machine, all directed for the standard Pascal language.

The design of Ronald Mak is very modular build upon robust
software engineering methodologies and the developed modules can be easily
customized (e.g. by extending the Pascal language) and can be readily
utilized in other similar application domains (e.g. implementing special
purpose languages by replacing only the Pascal scanner and parser).

The parser is a top-down one, easily understandable.
Mak produces an intermediate code representation of the program, that is Pascal
independent, and thus both the presented source-level debugger, interpreter and JVM
compiler are kept independent of the Pascal language,
since they operate on the Abstract
Syntax Tree based intermediate code representation.

The Java code of the book is very elegant and understandable.
The design of the interactive source level debugger and of the compiler targeted at the
Java Virtual Machine are also of outstanding quality.

As the author also declares, the book is more for the one who wants to
implement compilers than for the compiler theorist. For the student or engineer who
wants to realize interpreters/compilers, the book is magnificent.

Truly a great textbook

This book was just what I needed to refresh my fading memory of compiler design skills. And this one is cross-platform, as the code is written in Java.

The book goes step by step in developing a full Pascal interpreter and then compiler. Highly recommended!!

This book is one of the most practical examinations of writing a compiler that I have read.

It is filled with actual working code, so that a practical Software engineer can see what is happening as the chapters incrementally add to what has been developed in earlier chapters.
There is not a large emphasis on theory, and while necessary at some point, it allows for a more grounded approach to learning from a working code perspective. Allowing theory to be learned after the fact, once code has been seen in action.

Well written and well structured.

A pragmatic, interesting and smart introduction to the "Dismal Science" - a great read

I studied a couple of units of economics at college and it didn't find it a particularly accessible subject. Thankfully, Chang takes a pragmatic and passionate approach to the subject that explains the core concepts and ideas in a much clearer way than the dreaded textbooks I had to endure. Balanced yet persuasive, the book starts with the big picture of economics since 1776 and then zooms into topics with well-selected examples and a sense of context that allows even a casual reader to walk away with not just knowledge about the subject but the desire to learn more. Given my wariness from my college experience, I think this is a huge testament to Chang's skill in presenting a subject he clearly understands and cares about, with a writing style that keeps the reader turning the pages.

Very Good Job of Relating Economic History and Theories to the Real World; Lively and Well-Written

Economics--the principles about money in various situations both for the individual, national and/or global level--effects everyone in every part of the world. It should be one of the most fascinating subjects to learn about and yet is often one of the most tedious, pedantic and dull ones.

Ha-Joong Chang's goal is to remind readers what economics really is, why it matters, why we should care about it and how it really -can- be interesting AND make sense. What makes this book successful is that he is (1) knowledgeable (an economics professor at Cambridge University), (2) writes in understandable language using many real world examples to clarify economic concepts and (3) shows the differences and similarities of the world's main economies, why it's important to know, and how we are all interconnected.

I especially like that he is not pushing the same old "free market; free trade" point of view that most U.S. economists have. His goal is to give readers -several- different ways to analyze economies and let us apply them and evaluate for ourselves which ones are best.

His slightly irreverent "tone" as a writer/teacher is also refreshing. From the beginning, he suggests people can read the book in different ways, depending on whether they have "ten minutes (for chapter titles and the first page of each--a sneaky way of "baiting the hook" in the hope he'll grab our interest to go further), "a couple of hours" (Chapter 1 & 2 and the Epilogue, then skim at your heart's content) or "half a day" (for section titles and italicized summaries in each section, plus if you're fast the introductions and conclusions in each chapter)", Obviously, his preference is for readers to read the entire book, but it's refreshing to see an economist who has structured his book so that people still -can- get something meaningful out of it without reading each and every word in each chapter. He has enough confidence in his work to hope to draw you in to read the entire book, but if that doesn't happen, he assures readers that they still can get something of value from doing the above and don't need to plod through Chapter 1 and drop the book right there if that particular part doesn't speak to them.

The chapters are short, the type is large, the sentences are crisp, well-organized and even, occasionally, have a bit of humor. His references to real world companies and real world problems and what economics means in those context actually -does- make the theories he is teaching about much more relevant and much more interesting than in most econ books. (It is also -easier- to remember the concepts this way.) Every chapter ends with a concluding summary/overview-review of key points and why they matter and a recommendation for further reading. It was refreshing to find several long passages on Marxist economics--with the usual rebuttals, but at least with the acknowledgement that Marxist economics -does- "offer some very useful insights into capitalism" despite its limitations. The first section, laying down the basics of various theories, then makes way for Part II--real world applications. He does not shy away from the global inequality of resources and of income, and it is dramatic to see a chart of some nation's people earning $300 a year--or less. Production of resources, distribution of resources, the role of governments and of economic institutions (both national, like the we think of the U.S. stock exchange, and global institutions, like how our stock exchange is tied in with other nations in a 21st century global economy.)

It's clearly written, but not dumbed-down. Impossible not to learn something from this book--even if, as Professor Chang says, you only read parts of it and get out of it what most interests you.

Different Perspective

I've taken several economics courses at university level. They try very hard to push the subject as a science with equations and loads of charts and graphs to explain economic phenomena as if there were some correct formula to explain it all. The courses at university teach mostly from the classical or neo-classical school of thought. There was hardly ever acknowledgement of other schools' views or any attempt to argue whether some theories were correct. This book does a good job of making clear one school's way is not correct for everyone nor applicable at all times. The author makes arguments against some ways of thinking that are taken for granted as correct. For example, your university course is likely to teach you that protectionism inhibits economic growth. The author argues it often serves to make an economy stronger. There are introductions to many different economic schools of thought - Austrian, Behavioralist, Classical, Developmentalist, Institutionalist, Keynesian, Marxist, Neoclassical, Schumpeterian. If you know a student of economics, this book would be a good book to give them. It encourages broadening the mind to alternative explanations and solutions to economic issues.

Dr. King became a leader of the civil rights movement. In 1955, he helped to organize the famous Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott. Freedom rides, sit-ins, and protest marches strengthened the battle against discrimination. As a result of these, in 1964 the United States Congress passed the historic Civil Rights Bill.

Dr. King received world acclaim when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Congress has recently established a national holiday commemorating the birthday of this great man who courageously led a peaceful struggle for equal rights for all Americans.

A classic of 20th Century Homeric Scholarship and Analysis

This book is a deep study of the Iliad and the Odyssey, which focuses primarily on the Odyssey. Whitman, who was a John Simon Guggenheim fellow and professor at Harvard University, is a through scholar who writes beautifully. No doubt we today have more archaeological evidence of the Mycenean Age--more data-- than Whitman had in the 1950's. So with respect to matters outside what the ancient texts themselves present to the scholar and critic, It might be a boon to Homeric studies if this classic could be updated by Professor Whitman or another qualified scholar, but I personally treasure this book as a narrative essay on Homer, especially the Iliad, just as it is. One doesn't have to agree with everything in a book on Homer, especially one that was issued so long ago, to enjoy reading Homer with its author and to recognize the book as a very good book worth reading and careful study.

Read it before you eat it

How often does a book change your life? I'm not referring to "reading for pleasure" for some books, fact or fiction, can make an impression. I am talking about a real life-changing book that is also a pleasure to read. Bonnie Taub-Dix takes what has been, until now, a dull, scientific way of teaching us to watch what we eat and you've probably tossed aside magazine articles telling you to read labels. Now she hands us an easy to follow, easy to understand, down-to-earth method of doing what we hate doing, and in just a few chapters she has us doing it with spirit! Her introduction to each segment tells us what to expect and her Fast Facts helps us remember what we should not forget. All right, I had one negative reaction (stay with me on this). I finally substituted sorbet for my much-loved Ben & Jerry's. But wait! That negative turned into a real positive when my doctor was delighted with my "numbers." If you've been putting off making the necessary changes in your eating habits, please READ IT BEFORE YOU EAT IT and come along with me on an easy trip to better health, with a weight-loss bonus.

Informative and Recommended!

This book will illuminate the fact that the food industry is LYING to us, every. single. day. It is a quick read, and if you are buying packaged food regularly, you really ought to read it... it's very insightful and I have found nothing else like it. It's a bit too vague at times, but I'm not sure I could fault the author for that so much as the actual lack of clarity when it comes to food labels and laws. I reference this book often. This book, like so many others, importantly reinforced how important critical thinking in daily life is. I'm not a fan of making more laws to control and suppress, I'd rather leave the power to the people to decide what to do... food included. But for that to work, we need to be well-informed about our choices. This book will leave you feeling well-equipped to make the best food choices.
